Lineage Locators has an introductory offer for those who are new to genealogy. This service includes a telephonic consultation, a search of selected census records and genealogy databases, a written report of findings, and suggestions for possible future research. The cost of this offer is just $50.00. [After the initial research is conducted, if further research is requested, you will be charged the standard hourly rate.]

General Research/Prices

Since Lineage Locators is a family-run business with low overhead costs, we can provide genealogy research services at very reasonable rates. Lineage Locators will consult with you and, together, we will devise an appropriate research plan. For just $20 per hour, Lineage Locators will conduct research according to this plan and, when possible, provide copies of original genealogical records. Routine copying fees, such as a photocopy of the census sheet, are included in the hourly rate, however, if extensive photocopying is involved, there may be an extra charge. If the research involves obtaining copies of birth, marriage, or death certificates, or other similar documents, the cost of these records will be passed on to you.

Most repositories in the Washington, DC area do not charge an entrance fee to use their resources, however, in the event that you want research conducted at a location that does charge, the cost of this fee will be passed on to you. Before the research is conducted, however, you will be notified of the charges and can decide then if you want to pursue research at that location.

Census Look-ups

Lineage Locators also provides quick census look-ups for those who can provide detailed information for someone listed in a federal Census Index. This information includes full name, age, city/township, county, and state. The fee is just $10 for a search of one household in one county for one census year. A copy of the census sheet will be sent to you if available. (It should be noted that in most cases, only the head of the household is listed in the index, not all members of the household, i.e. if you are looking for a child in the census, he/she is probably not listed in the index.)

Field Trips

On a limited basis, Lineage Locators can arrange to conduct personal research trips at various locations in the Washington, DC area, such as Arlington National Cemetery, and other locations. We can also photograph headstones, houses, and other places of interest. Cost will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Research Results

Lineage Locators will make every effort to find the information you are interested in, however, it should be made clear that Lineage Locators cannot guarantee that all records will be found. That is the unfortunate nature of genealogy. Some records may have been lost, destroyed, or mislabeled, and therefore, may not be available.

Lineage Locators will provide you with copies of original records (if available), including full documentation of the sources used, i.e. book numbers, page numbers, etc. Lineage Locators will also provide you with a detailed statement of charges, and a research log showing all sources searched. Lineage Locators provides personal attention to each request and will keep you apprised of the progress as it occurs.

Method of Payment

Before research can begin, you must submit payment and a written request of the research you want conducted. The payment must be in the form of a money order, cashier's check, or personal check, made payable to "Lineage Locators." Do NOT send cash. There is a 7-10 day waiting period for personal checks to clear the bank. A fee of $25 will be charged for any checks returned due to Non Sufficient Funds. Lineage Locators can usually complete research requests within two weeks, depending on current workload, the availability of the records, and the method of payment, i.e. payments made by personal checks will take longer.
